Winnipeg’s new airport terminal has been listed as one of the world’s most iconic, alongside those in Morocco, Spain, France and Singapore.
The list was compiled by the Travel Channel, which lauded the terminal at Winnipeg’s James A. Richardson International Airport for the way “skylights, an atrium and large windows fill the space with light and bring the big sky inside.”
The terminal, which opened in October 2011, was also given a nod for being “the first freestanding airport building in Canada that’s LEED-certified.”
LEED, an acronym for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a certification program for environmentally-green construction.
“There was a time, not so long ago, when airports in major international cities weren’t more attractive than your average industrial warehouse,” states the Travel Channel article.
Now, “cities are tapping renowned architects — and making investments in the billions — to transform their busiest terminals into fully functional works of art.”
Renowned architect César Pelli (who designed the Petronas Towers in Malaysia and the International Financial Centre in Hong Kong) drew his inspiration from the vast prairies and sky when he conceived Winnipeg’s terminal, the Travel Channel article notes.
The Winnipeg terminal is the only Canadian one on the list.
The others are:
- Marrakech-Menara Airport, Terminal 1(Marrakech, Morocco)
- Incheon International Airport (Incheon South Korea)
- Barajas Airport, Terminal 4 (Madrid, Spain)
- King Abdulaziz International Airport, Jeddah Hajj Terminal (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia)
- Kansai International Airport (Osaka, Japan)
- Lyon-Saint Exupery (Lyon, France)
- Changi Airport Terminal 3 (Singapore)
- Wellington Airport “The Rock” Terminal(Wellington, New Zealand)
- Carrasco International Airport (Montevideo, Uruguay)
