Global interest in art from Africa has grown massively over the past decade. But if the principal city of interest last year was Cape Town and the opening of the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, for next month at least, attention will be shifting north to Marrakech.

February 24 sees both the inauguration of the first major international art fair on the continent, 1:54 (which runs in New York each May and London every October), and simultaneously, a major relaunch of the Museum of Contemporary African Art Al Maaden (known as Macaal), a private institution built to showcase works from the 2,000 or so in the collection amassed by Othman Lazraq, and his father Alami Lazraq. Their company, Groupe Alliances, is the largest builder of hotels in Morocco and Othman is reckoned by Forbes to be one of the richest men in Africa.
