Water supply: AfDB grants USD 157 million loan to Morocco

African Development Bank-Morocco – The board of directors of the African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a loan of US$ 157 million for Morocco to enable the north African country finance the Marrakech Region Water Supply Project, Moroccan radio reported here Friday.

When completed, the project will benefit approximately two million people by 2017 and three million people by 2030. Out of these numbers, more than one million people live in the rural areas.

It will also meet the needs of the country’s phosphate industry.

AfDB resident representative in Morocco, Amani Abou-Zeid, told Morocco Radio that the Bank would finance 60% of the total cost of the project.

He said that the loan, the 13th in the water sector, makes AfDB the first donor to the sector in Morocco.
