Water challenge on 151-mile run for cancer cause

A BARMAN will be gasping for a drink when he pushes himself to the limit in the Sahara.

More used to shaking the odd cocktail at Somewhere Else in Cirencester, Andy Sampson will have only 12 litres of water a day for drinking, washing and cooking during the Marathon des Sables.

He tackles the six-day, 151-mile endurance race in Morocco, from April 5. He is running in aid of Hope for Tomorrow. The national charity helps cancer sufferers and their families.

“It’s advertised as the hardest foot race on the planet and that’s its attraction,” said Andy. “I’ve always run marathons but this has got to be the ultimate challenge, not only in distance, but also in environment and climate.”

He is treasurer of the bar’s running club Running Somewhere, and will run with its secretary John Buck.

He tackled the London Marathon last year and has also run the New York and Paris marathons.

To help boost sponsorship, the bar holds a Safari Supper on March 22 and a music and karaoke night on March 25.
