United Nations, Feb 25 (Prensa Latina) Representatives of Morocco and the Polisario Front will hold a new round of informal talks in New York from March 11 to 13, announced UN deputy official spokesperson, Eduardo del Buey.
The meeting will take place in the New York town of Mahansset again, with assistance from the UN envoy for Western Sahara, Christopher Ross, and delegates from Algeria and Mauritania, neighboring countries of the territory occupied by Moroccan forces since 1975.
The meeting aims to make progress in the discussion of the proposals made by each party with a view to reach an agreement to the problem that has occupied the attention of the UN since the early 1990.
Participants at the meeting will also discuss measures of trust and other issues related to environmental issues, natural resources and demining, said del Buey.
The previous irregular exchange for the revival of formal negotiations that were stalled since 2008 took place last July, also in Mahansset.
These informal contacts were arranged by the Security Council and began in Vienna, Austria in August 2009 and continued in New York and Malta during the years 2010 and 2011.
The UN is committed to hold a referendum on self determination in that territory and in 1991 established a mission there, which is comprised of some 230 military personnel now. The Western Sahara is included in the official list of 16 dependent territories as recognized by the Decolonization Committee of the UN.
Past December, the General Assembly adopted a resolution that reaffirmed its responsibility to the people of Western Sahara and urged for a political solution leading to self-determination.
