The free trade agreement between the EU and Morocco that started on1st October, is again put on discussion not only in Italy but also in Spain.
The agricoltural association COAG has just published a study in which it denounces that Morocco’s farmers can use at least 56 plant protection products that are forbidden in the EU to control the parasites in tomato crops. As for what concerns imports from foreign countries, the EU has set a maximum limit of residuals (LMR) which is permitted for particular active substances.
So, it’s necessary – according to COAG – that the Spanish government and the European ones will reinforce border controls to avoid the entrance on the Community market of tomatoes and other fruit and vegetables products with residuals limits higher than permitted.
This free trade agreement is in contrast with the efforts made by European farmers and in particular those made by the Italians and the Spanish one, to decrease the use of chemicals on fruit and vegetables crops. “Spanish fruit and vegetables producers – denounces Andrés Góngora, COAG manager of the fruit and vegetables sector – can’t defend themselves against Morocco’s unfair competition. If there’s free trade, then the rules must be the same for everyone”.
