Rabat – The United States observes “with admiration and optimism” the political changes taking place in Morocco for years, the influential U.S. Senator Joseph Lieberman, said Wednesday in Rabat .
The senator, who is on a visit to Morocco, told the press after a meeting with the Minister of State Abdellah Baha that his country follows with enthusiasm and admiration the political changes that have occurred in recent years in the Kingdom under the leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, a process that benefits from the support of the Moroccan people.
Lieberman, Senator from the State of Connecticut and former presidential candidate in 2004, said he had discussed with Baha developments on the regional and international scenes, particularly in Syria, stressing the important role of the Kingdom in this issue.
According to him, the emphasis was also put on the situation in Mali and the Sahara issue, describing the Moroccan proposal for autonomy in the southern provinces as “relevant and realistic.” He hoped in this respect that the negotiating tracks can be identified to make progress in the Sahara issue.
This meeting also focused on the aspect of governance, the fight against corruption and economic development to improve the living conditions of the population, said the U.S. Senator who recalled the long-standing relationship of deep friendship between the two countries.
Lieberman said he was proud that the United States is involved in various programs of cooperation with Morocco, especially in the context of the free trade agreement and the Millennium Development Goals, noting that Morocco is the second recipient of U.S. aid in the world, which demonstrates “our interest in Morocco and our confidence in its government.”
