Rabat – The mythical hard rock band, the Scorpions, made their way to Morocco to meet their fans during the Eleventh edition of the Mawazine festival (May 19-26).
Speaking at a press conference, Klaus Meine said that the band’s most famous hit “The wind of change ” was written in historical conditions similar to the transformations experienced by some peoples in North Africa and the Middle-East.
“It is amazing and very touching the strong message this song sends. After all it is a song of home and a peace anthem,” said Meine, who was inspired to write the song following a concert in Moscow in 1989 when the Soviet President Gorbachev launched the Perestroika heralding the end of the cold war.
The lyrics refer to several landmarks of Moscow such as the Moskva river and the Gorky park.
“We believe we go all over the world and build bridges with music. This is our way to bring people together,” said Klause.
The Scorpions also made it clear that Morocco is a stop in their farewell tour which will also take them to north and south America. “When we announced the final tour in 2010 we had no idea how emotional it really would be, ” said Klause, adding that ” it feels like a marathon, but I can see the finish line.”
” We want to finish upon a high note. It is easy to say but so much harder to do and to say good bye,” he said with an emotional tone.
The band explained that their retirement is imposed by age,” At some point in time, you cannot play 70 concerts in countries year after year. It is great to play for the fans on the stage, but traveling takes a lot of energy.
The Scorpions will give a concert in the international stage of Mawazine festival on Thursday night to the delight of their Moroccan fans.
