The Moroccan Spring Blossom Earlier

Since King Mohammed VI ascended to the throne in 1999, a sustained process of political opening has been occurring in Morocco. The political sphere has become more diverse, and safeguards for human rights have strengthened remarkably. General restrictions on press freedoms and repressive measures against individual journalists have gradually decreased. In what is an unprecedented step for the Arab world that has thus far remained unmatched, Morocco has also embarked on the difficult road of examining its repressive recent past. The National Commission for Reconciliation and Justice was established in 2003 to lead collective governmental and nongovernmental efforts to come to terms with the repression of the last few decades and to do justice to its victims. The recent constitutional reforms came to crown a series of efforts and demands expressed by the Moroccan youth. Fortunately, the 48 years old reform minded monarch was and has always been close to his people aspirations and now it is the duty of the all the political parties to implement the articles and chapters of this ambitious constitution and therefore meet the expectations of the Moroccans. All Moroccans now are looking forward to a powerful participation in the November 25 elections. This will be a new beginning of a strong and accountable government that will certainly be confronted to new challenges and for sure won’t have the magic stick to resolve all pending problems but should show strong aspects of good governance and be committed to be accountable and should not hesitate to deploy more and more efforts to achieve most of what Moroccans aspire for.
