Rabat – Investigations carried out by security services against the backdrop of attempt to assault the house of a woman soothsayer, recently in Salé (near Rabat), have unearthed a plot by members of a broken up terrorist ring to set up a training camp in the Rif mountains (north of Morocco) serving as a rear base to carry out terrorist acts against the public authorities, the Interior Ministry said on Thursday in a statement.

To plot these terrorist acts, the cell planned to make explosives using the internet. It also planned to commit shop thefts in Salé to finance its criminal projects, the statement said.

The arrested members set up a fake security checkpoint near the city of Ouazzane, where they attempted to take away goods belonging to a smuggler operating in the region.

The arrest of the suspects, on October 17, resulted in the seizure of two cutlasses, two hoods, two ropes -one of which to be used in hanging-, two jackets, a hand torch and tools facilitating criminal acts, along with black flags symbolizing Al Qaida.
Five of the arrestees were remanded in custody, while four others are still in police custody pending further investigation by the criminal police under the supervision of the Prosecution.
