Rabat – The judiciary police dismantled a terrorist cell, dubbed “Ansar Ashariaa in Islamic Maghreb”, which was planning acts of sabotage in several Moroccan cities, a statement by the Interior Ministry said on Monday.
The cell is made up of eight members, including a former inmate sentenced under the anti-terror law, and led by an activist known on websites related to Al Qaeda organization and who have expertize in manufacturing bombs. This cell planned to perpetrate sabotage acts against strategic sites and buildings, headquarters of security services and tourist sites in several Moroccan cities, it added.
The cell’s members, who adopt the Al Qaeda ideology, were making contacts with Al Qaeda terrorist groups, which are operating in the Sahel region, northern Mali, to obtain the necessary military and material support in order to carry out their terrorist plans, it said.
The suspects will be brought to justice after the completion of the investigation conducted under the supervision of the public prosecutor’s office, it concluded.
