Tangier – The Tangier Med port vehicle terminal, intended for export-import operations of the service notably car makers setting up their operations in Morocco, was opened Friday.
The inauguration ceremony of this important port infrastructure, carried out on 18.5 ha of platform for an investment of 600 million dirhams, was marked by the presence of Aziz Rebbah, Minister of Equipment and Transport, Fouad Douiri, Minister of Energy, Mines, Water and Environment, Abdelkader Aâmara, Minister of Industry, Trade and New Technologies and Mohamed Najib Boulif, Delegate Minister of General Affairs and Governance.
This facility, with a processing capacity of 1 million units per year, has a pier with two berths, with a length of 220 m, equipped with a dolphin that can accommodate the largest Vessel carriers (240 m long), and a third RORO berth in reserve.
The Renault-Nissan plant of Melloussa, opened on Thursday, is the largest terminal operator. The French manufacturer has a concession contract for a period of 30 years, covering the use of 13 acres of medians of a storage capacity of 5,600 vehicles, to allow export to eventually of 400,000 vehicles per year.
In addition to the section reserved for Renault, the terminal has an area of 5.5 ha Common User medians with the possibility of expansion, by building height.
Of the 600 million investments, 460 million was spent on the construction of the wharf, 108 million to the development of the median and 27 million to build a rail terminal serving directly from the factory Renault-Nissan.
In a press statement, Aâmara said the new terminal will strengthen Morocco’s offer for logistics sector dedicated to the automotive industry, opening the door to further investments in this area.
This infrastructure also provides a leading platform for transshipment activities and export-import of vehicles, he added, noting that it will meet the needs of Renault-Nissan plant in exporting.
For his part, Rebbah noted that the vehicle terminal is another milestone in the industrial infrastructure of Morocco’s north, serving operators in the automotive industry in Morocco.
The Renault group began in early February to use the terminal to export vehicles assembled in the factory in Casablanca Somaca to European markets.
