New York (UN) – Spain, a friendly country of Morocco, “closely follows” the latest developments of the Sahara issue and hopes that the parties reach a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution to this long-running conflict, Spain’s State Secretary for Foreign Affairs Gonzalo de Benito said on Wednesday in New York.

“We closely follow the statements made lately,” Benito said at a press briefing on the sidelines of a high-level meeting of the UNGA on “the role of member states in mediation”, recalling Moroccan head of government Abdelilah Benkirane’s visit to Madrid last Friday.

“We listened to him carefully and we hope that things will work themselves out,” he said, underlining the geographic position of Morocco “with which we share ties of friendship.”

Morocco and Spain announced, on Monday at U.N. HQ in New York, the launch of a joint initiative to promote mediation in the Mediterranean.
