The Skhirate Agreement offers a sound platform for resolving the crisis that has been rattling Libya for years, said Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita following talks with Secretary-General Envoy and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Ghassan Salamé.
He said that the agreement, which has been achieved in Morocco on December 17, 2015, represents a solid basis that can be amended in order to reach a solution to the crisis in Libya.
Bourita stressed that King Mohammed VI pays particular attention to the Libyan issue, given the historical relations between the two peoples, the fact that the two countries belong to the same Maghreb space and the challenges imposed by the situation in Libya.
“Morocco reiterates its support for the role of the United Nations in the action plan set up by Ghassan Salamé,” Bourita said, adding that the Kingdom supports the principles, details and goals of this plan.
The Libyan crisis needs a political solution rather than a military one, he added, noting that the solution must come from the Libyans themselves.
Only dialogue and the involvement of all parties can lead to a solution, on the basis of the platform of the Skhirat Agreement, Bourita stressed.
For his part, the UN envoy highlighted Morocco’s “significant contribution” to address the Libyan crisis and its support for UN initiatives, adding that the Kingdom will continue its support to achieve the implementation of the United Nations action plan that it has supported since the very first day.
Salamé said that his talks with Bourita focused on the means to strengthen stability and peace in Libya, efforts to accelerate the settlement of the Libyan crisis and to avoid any armed conflict or security crisis, as well as solutions to the major issues that concern all Libyan citizens and affect their daily lives.
He underlined in this regard the need to set up institutions on the basis of the respect of the Constitution, national reconciliation and presidential and legislative elections.
