Skarpnord leads in Morocco
Marianne Skarpnord laid claim to the top of the leaderboard on another chaotic day at the weather-beaten Lalla Meryem Cup in Morocco.
The Norwegian took advantage as she got some of the best of the conditions to complete her second round in six under 65, moving to seven under for the tournament.
That put Skarpnord one shot clear of Jade Schaeffer, one of the co-leaders from the opening day, who could not match her 67 of Friday as she signed for a 69 moments before play was called off early due to poor light.
That call came at 6.44pm, before a number of players had even been able to tee off their second rounds after a five-hour delay earlier due to poor weather.
Skarpnord credited her much-improved second round to some putting tips from boyfriend Richard Green, who is playing in the Hassan Trophy just up the road.
“Greenie was here last night and helped me a bit. I was a bit frustrated,” Skarpnord told ladieseuropeantour.com.
“He helped me a bit and he’s got a theory on what he feels works and I’m trying that out and hopefully it will work at the end of the day.”
Although she struggled a little more on the second day, Schaeffer is happy with her position on the leaderboard after day two.
“Now maybe I prefer my situation because I’m just one shot behind Marianne Skarpnord and I attack now: I hope!” the Frenchwoman said.
“I have a good feeling with this course and with my game and I try always to win, but we’ll see.”
Julie Maisongrosse, who held a share of the opening day lead with Schaeffer was also on six-under par along with England’s Eleanor Givens – enjoying an excellent start to her professional career – but neither were able to complete their second rounds before play was called off.
