Siemens has won an order to supply 100MW of turbines to projects in Morocco, marking the German group’s first wind equipment sales in Africa.
The order is from Nareva Holding for 44 machines for the Haouma and Foum El Oued wind farms, and includes a five-year service contract for each project.
The Haouma wind farm will be built around 30km east of Tangier, six kilometres south of the Mediterranean coast.
The Foum El Oued plant will be built in the municipality of Laâyoune, 9km southeast of the port of Laâyoune in southern Morocco.
Both 50MW wind farms will be comprised of 22 Siemens SWT-2.3-93 turbines and are expected to start commercial operation by summer 2013.
“These two orders mark Siemens Wind Power´s entry on the African wind market and clearly show that our internationalisation strategy is successful,” says Felix Ferlemann, chief executive of the German group’s wind unit.
The Moroccan government has set a renewable energy target of 20% of national electricity consumption by 2020.
It recently invited expressions of interest for five wind farms totalling 850MW, representing the nation’s most significant step yet on its path to 2GW of capacity by the end of the decade.
