Noor Ouarzazate CSP plant in Morocco
Spanish engineering and technology group SENER has recently executed the start-up of the solar receiver for the third phase of the 580-MW Noor Ouarzazate solar complex in Morocco.
SENER said in a statement on Wednesday that it is putting into operation the different components of the Noor Ouarzazate III (NOORo III) concentrated solar power (CSP) plant. The company is using its own central receiver tower and molten salt heat storage technology for this project.
As a preliminary step in the receiver start-up, SENER has concluded functional tests in the solar field, which consists of 7,400 heliostats HE54. Now, the receiver is going through pre-heating tests and in the coming weeks the company will circulate the molten salts throughout the receiver to heat them to the daily commercial operation temperature, it explained.
The final step of the commissioning phase will be to generate steam using the heat captured from the molten salts. The plant’s delivery to the client is expected to take place in the final quarter of the year.
The Noor solar complex will use both CSP and photovoltaic (PV) technology. The first phase of the scheme, a parabolic trough CSP park of 160 MW, was switched on in February 2016. There are two other solar thermal portions and a 70-MW PV facility.
