DESPITE a good anchovy season in Morocco, there is still a lack of the sardines which usually swim with them, according to trade contacts. Meanwhile, Portuguese fish is as scarce and expensive as ever.

“The water temperatures have been too high for sardines in the coastal waters, so they’re still out at sea. People think they might come in around November or December,” one British importer said.
His company has not been able to sell sardines on promotion this year, and perhaps because of this, consumer sales are down 7% year-on-year, based on a rolling 52-week period. UK market demand has decreased from 5 800 tonnes to 5 500 tonnes.
