SALE Rotary Club is backing a 16-year-old student who is joining a community project in Morocco this summer.

Sale Grammar School sixth former Theresa Crookall, from Legh Road, Sale, Moor, will be part of a 17-strong Girlguiding team in the Atlas Mountains for the final stage of an international three-year project.

Theresa, a member of the 1st Sale Moor Rangers, was chosen to join the group on a flight to Marrakech and then a two-day trek to the mountain village of Imlil 40 miles away.

There they will paint and repair public buildings, dig irrigation trenches, plant trees and tutor local women on ways of turning craft skills into extra family income.

“The aim is to help improve their quality of life and, if it’s successful, Girlguiding will think of extending further into the Atlas Mountains or deploying the experience in other countries,” said Theresa.

Sale Rotary Club is helping to fund Theresa’s personal expenses.

President James Eisen explained: “Theresa will be doing voluntary community work in a North African mountain village which is a much different culture to the one she is used to – and what she is doing ticks a good many boxes for us. We are pleased to help.”
