The Russian sailing ship “Sedov” that is making its round-the- world voyage has already successfully overcome a 5,000- mile distance (the first stage) and started its transatlantic cruise. The route from the port of Casablanca (Morocco) to Brazil that is nearly 3,000 miles long is one of the longest and most difficult routes it has ever covered.

The current Transatlantic cruise will require 23 days. But this will be only the beginning of the second 6-month stage of its round-the-world voyage. The legendary bark “Sedov” will cross 2 oceans, visit the South American ports, cross the Drake Strait, pass by the legendary Cape Horn, visit the exotic islands of Polynesia in the Pacific Ocean, and cross the equator twice, Chief Editor of the Information Centre of the 1st round-the-world voyage of the bark “Sedov” Lyubov Yolkina said in an interview with the Voice of Russia.

“There is a long-standing tradition to celebrate the Neptune Day when a ship crosses the equator. The time has not come yet to reveal all the secrets. There is a special group on board the “Sedov” sailing ship that is preparing the scenario for the upcoming celebrations.”

The change of the marine students’ personnel on the “Sedov” bark occurred the day before in Casablanca (Morocco). 102 marine students arrived there from the Russian seaport of Murmansk. The newcomers adapted to the situation quickly and started performing their duties. They have excellently withstood all the tests.

The main objective of such cruises is teaching marine students, Rector of the Murmansk State Technical University Professor Alexander Yershov says.

They acquire navigation experience and receive the diplomas of sailors, motormen, and electrics. The learning process takes 6 months. (TAPE ENDS)

Altogether, 306 marine students of the Russian military academies will be able to do practical work on board the “Sedov” bark that sailed out of St. Petersburg on May 20th . Its current round-the-world voyage is dedicated to the 1150th anniversary of the Russian State system and to the Great Russian geographical discoveries. During the 14-month long voyage the “Sedov” bark will cover more than 45,000 miles and will visit more than 30 European, Asian, African, and American ports. His voyage will be completed next July.
