New York – The Sahara issue and the crisis in Syria were at the heart of talks, on Thursday in New York, between Morocco’s Foreign Minister Saad Dine El Otmani and the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
During the talks, El Otmani provided an overview of the latest developments in the Shara, notably the elaboration of the latest report and the adoption of the Security Council resolution 2044 as well as an assessment of the efforts of the UN Secretary General’s Personal Envoy Christopher Ross.
“We presented to the UN Secretary General an assessment of the different aspects of the process concerning the Moroccan Sahara, especially after the the publication of the latest report of Mr Ban on the issue and the adoption of resolution 2044,” El Otmani told MAP following the talks.
“We also expressed Morocco’s concerns over the content of the report and the attempts at derailing the mandate of the MINURSO as well as the obstacles hindering the negotiation process,” El Otmani added.
“We have agreed to continue consultations on this assessment,” said Morocco’s FM.
Concerning the Syrian issue, Ban hailed Morocco for its support to the UN efforts to put an end to violence and find a solution to the crisis in Syria
“We have expressed our support for the efforts of the Secretary General as well as for the peace plan of the joint UN and Arab League emissary, Kofi Annan,” El Otmani said, recalling the participation of the Kingdom in the UN monitoring mission in Syria.
