Washington  –  Algeria and Morocco’s political disagreement over the Sahara remained an impediment to deeper counterterrorism cooperation, US Department of State said in its 2011 Country Reports on Terrorism, issued on Tuesday in Washington.

The Department of State, which commended Morocco’s counterterrorism strategy in cooperation with regional and international partners, regretted that the  level of bilateral cooperation on counterterrorism between Morocco and Algeria did not improve due to the dispute over the Sahara.

It added that the regional terrorist organization Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) is taking advantage of the volatile political situation in the Sahel.
