Entitled “The Revival Of Medical Tourism In Morocco : An Overlooked Yet Profitable Industry To Grasp “, the study explores the opportunities for the country to invest in this booming sector.
The Moroccan Institute of Strategic Intelligence (www.imis.ma) unveiled on November 12th a Policy Paper on the revival of Medical Tourism in Morocco. Written by Camelia Dinia and Jihad Jorio, two specialists in International Strategy and Influence, this analysis sheds light on the development prospects of this industry, straddling two sectors that have been severely tested during the coronavirus pandemic and whose consequences are relatively positive for one (the Medical sector) while they are alarming for the other (the Tourism sector).
The study sets out a number of strategic guidelines that could help transition Morocco from an underrated player in the field of Medical Tourism to a key destination in this booming market which should reach 207.9 billion USD by 2027. The authors also explain why Medical Tourism represents a concrete opportunity to generate direct foreign exchange and contribute to the overall development of the national economy, driven by the ageing of the population in a postmodern society, coupled with improved accessibility to quality, low-cost medical services and a growing demand for procedures uncovered by insurance, such as dental reconstruction and cosmetic surgery.
Moreover, authors recommend using governmental support to build a national branding strategy as a recovery leverage to promote the image of Morocco at an international scale, taking advantage from its competitive advantages within the field of “Tourism & Health”, such as the reputation of the country, its strategic location as well as its political stability and hospitality infrastructures.
In the same way, the analysis focuses on an African alliance and developing partnerships, as well as founding a Medical Tourism office, developing adapted regulatory frameworks, and upgrading digital technology in order to improve the country’s competitiveness.
