Washington – The reforms spurred by HM King Mohammed VI reflect insightfulness and sense of responsibility, US Undersecretary of State for the Maghreb, Raymond D. Maxwell, said in an interview with MAP.
HM the King is a “responsible leader” who, since his enthronement, anticipated such key reforms as the Family Code, the National Initiative for Human Development (INDH) and the Equity and Reconciliation Committee, said the US official, who will be visiting Morocco in mid-January.
“These reforms are stimulated or propelled by anything that is happening across the region,” Maxwell explained, noting that large-scale overhauls were already on track in Morocco long before the breaking out of the Arab Spring.
The Moroccan people hold their King in high regard and have a strong attachment to the Monarchy, he said.
Highlighting the long-standing friendship between the two countries, Maxwell said the Obama administration is looking forward to working with the incoming Moroccan government.
On the legislative polls of November 25, the US official applauded the Moroccan government on holding the elections, which he described as “successful”.
In this respect, Maxwell commended the decision to allow international and local observers to make sure international standards for election monitoring are respected, noting the significant participation as evidenced by a turnout that was higher than the one registered in 2007 legislative elections.
The party that won the elections, the Development and Justice Party (PJD), was “the best organized and most accurately reflected the aspirations and the desires of the people who elected,” he said.
With 107 of the 395 parliament’s seat, the PJD, a moderate Islamist party, won the majority in the legislative elections, the first after the approval of a new constitution by the Moroccan people on July 1.
