Rabat – The constitutional referendum and the parliamentary elections of November 25 are reflective of an acceleration of reforms spurred by HM King Mohammed VI since his enthronement, underscored on Sunday in Rabat U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Speaking during a ceremony marking the launch of construction works for a new complex of the U.S. Embassy in Rabat, Clinton highlighted Morocco’s leading role in the MENA region in terms of reforms.

She said the Moroccan government is forging ahead “with the necessary momentum” to deliver democratic reform promises, adding that the U.S. is willing to help in this direction.

On the longstanding ties between Morocco and the U.S., Clinton recalled that the Kingdom was the first country to recognize the independence of her country in 1776.

Clinton also pointed out that Morocco offered the U.S. a delegation building in Tangier, which is now a museum. She added that this first U.S. diplomatic property played a key role in fostering bilateral relations.

The U.S. Secretary of State also announced that her department will launch a new programme for global entrepreneurship in Morocco with the aim of creating economic opportunities and promoting entrepreneurship.

Speaking during the same occasion, Foreign Minister Saad Dine El Otmani said that the launch of the construction works for the new Embassy stands ushers a new era in the process of strengthening cooperation between the two countries.

The new Embassy complex, to be built for a total cost of 150 million dollars, is one of the key projects launched by the U.S. Department of State this year.
