Paris – France hails the adoption of UNSC resolution on the Sahara which sends a clear message of support for reforms carried out by Morocco mainly in the human rights field, the French Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

“France hails the unanimous adoption of resolution 2044 renewing the MINURSO’s mandate. This resolution recalls the effort made by the international community to reach a just, durable and mutually acceptable solution to the Sahara issue, the French Foreign Ministry’s spokesman Bernard Valero said.

“This resolution sends a clear message of support for reforms carried out by Morocco mainly in the human rights field, and underlines the significant progress achieved regarding trust-building measures,” he said at a press briefing.

“The settlement of the Sahara issue is a pressing need not only for the local population, but also for the sake of stability, security and integration in the Maghreb region,” he added.

“We commend efforts made for the normalization of relations between Morocco and Algeria,” he noted.

In its resolution 2044, adopted unanimously, the UN Security Council extended the mandate of MINURSO for one year until 30 April 2013 and reiterated its call on Algeria to allow a registration by the UNHCR of the population in Tindouf camps.
