Moroccan group OCP, a global leader in the phosphate and phosphate derivatives markets, will boost investments in renewable energy in an effort to achieve complete energy independence with a generation capacity of 600 MW by 2020.

The group will invest in wind, solar and hydro as well as in cogeneration, targeting an “optimal mix” which will allow it to produce all the energy it uses, in an environmentally friendly way, Energy Minister Abdelkader Amara said at a mining conference in London last week.

Since 2010, OCP has increased its co-generation capacity to 350 MW at present, which was enough to cover about 60% of its electricity needs in 2015.

The group has nearly as much projects under development and targets to boost its generation capacity to 600 MW by 2020.

OCP has already started to diversify its energy supply with a notable focus on renewable energy. Its Phosboucraa unit, which is based in the southern part of Morocco, meets 90% of its electricity needs with wind power.

Morocco’s current regulatory framework allows big electricity consumers, over 300 MW in capacity, to build generation capacity of their own and connect it to the grid.
