Over the weekend, Morocco’s King Mohammed VI sent a letter to President Obama in which he stated that in 1777 Morocco was the first nation to recognize American independence. In a column in the New York Post, Benny Avni voices hope that this July could represent a significant democratic milestone for Morocco. However, he writes of his disappointment that the Obama Admininstration has not lent the same support to Morocco’s peaceful transition to a more democratic state that it has to more chaotic peace movements around the Arab world.
