Belgrade – Morocco is confident in the capacity of the Non-Aligned Movement to adapt to international changes and to the diversity of its intellectual constituents, State Secretary to the Foreign Minister, Latifa Akherbach, said on Tuesday in Belgrade.
Addressing a meeting in Belgrade celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Movement, Akherbach stressed the need for reinvoigorating the action of the grouping and renew its structures in order to meet the international challenges according to an approach that promotes compromise and consultation.
The Moroccan official added that Morocco advocates common action and consultation between the movement’s members with the aim of promoting south-south cooperation, developing interregional cooperation programmes and intensifying coordination between G77+ China as well as strengthening North-South cooperation through multisectoral partnerships.
This realistic and practical approach will enable the movement to preserve its historical heritage, keep up to its principles and increase its influence at the international level, underscored Akherbach.
Concerning future prospects, Akherbach noted that the Movement is called upon to support people’s right to democracy and promote development efforts taking into account solidarity, sustainability, good governance, peace and security.
At the regional level, Akherbach made it clear that a time when the people of North Africa are aspiring to democracy dignity, the biggest disappointment would be to see artificial regional disputes fueled, dissensions sowed and separatism funded.
In this regard, the Moroccan official deplored that a united, prosperous, stable and economically-integrated Maghreb without closed borders remains unachieved due to reasons which Morocco deems incomprehensible and inadmissible.
On the artificial dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, she decried that the other parties continue to reject the UN calls to which the Kingdom adhere and endeavours to implement with good faith in accordance with the Security Council resolutions.
The other parties persist in violating the provisions of the International humanitarian law with their refusal to enable the UNHCR to conduct a head-count of the population held against their will in the Tindouf camps (south-western Algeria), Akhebach said, noting that this sensus will pave the way for ensuring international protection and guaranteeing human rights to the sequestrated population in the polisario-run camps.
