Morocco is the first among Arab countries to approve a “new constitution and real reforms”, said Sunday Fareed Zakaria, journalist, commentator and CNN host.

“With The constitutional reforms that were approved by 98 pc of the polls, it sounds you’re on the road to a constitutional monarchy, most in the European style,” said Fareed Zakaria who was hosting Morocco’s Foreign Minister Taib Fassi-Fihri on the Global Public Square (GPS) programme.
The US commentator recalled that the new constitution stipulates that the Prime Minister will be appointed from the party that won majority in elections, thus consolidating his status to Head of Government.
Touching on Morocco’s religious tolerance, Zakaria underscored Morocco’s pioneering experience in the Muslim world throught the setting up of a programme for training women preachers (Mourchidat) .
Speaking during the hour-long programme, Fassi Fihri said that Morocco has always prepared for the constitutional reform, adopted on July 1 following a referendum.
Morocco has been committed to the logic of reforms since the last fifteen years,” added the Moroccan official.
The new constitution defines the status of the Sovereign as Amir Al Mouminine (Commander of the Faithful), head of state, its supreme representative, symbol of the Nation’s unity, and Supreme Commander and Chief of Staff of the Royal Armed Forces (FAR), Fasi Fihri underscored.
Under the new supreme law, the head of the executive branch will “manage and define the country’s orientations relating to economic and social issues,” as part of an “open competition to all political parties,” Fassi Fihri went on to say.
