Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari thanked king Mohammed VI for the success of a Moroccan-Nigerian project under which Morocco will build a 1.3 billion fertilizers plant in Nigeria.
‘’We are well on our way to becoming a regional and global fertilizer power house,’’ said President Buhari on his official twitter account after announcing the signing by the two countries of the chemicals Platform in Nigeria that will produce Ammonia and various NPK and DAP fertilizers, using Nigeria’s gas reserves.
‘’Let me also use this opportunity, on behalf of Nigerians, to thank my brother and friend, His Majesty the King of Morocco for being with us during this difficult but exciting journey,’’ Buhari said.
The president added that the new plant, when completed, will complement the existing Dangote and Indorama Chemicals facilities which produce urea, ammonia and other industrial raw materials.
The two African leaders had a phone talk over this project earlier in March. The plant will have a capacity to produce 750,000 tons of ammonia and 1 million tons of phosphate-based fertilizers annually by 2025.
In January, King Mohammed VI and President Buhari also expressed willingness to forge ahead with a gas pipeline deal.
The Moroccan-Nigerian off-shore on-shore gas pipeline will benefit 13 African countries and will also help Western African nations develop their gas exports to Europe, especially Mauritania and Senegal where significant gas assets have been discovered.
The fertilizer plant and the gas pipeline benefits transcend bilateral Moroccan-Nigerian cooperation to promote trade, regional cooperation and energy diversification and food security in West Africa.
