The Dutch government is to support Tunisia, Egypt, Morocco, Jordan and Libya in their process of transition.

This was the message to the House of Representatives in a letter from foreign minister Uri Rosenthal and international cooperation minister Ben Knapen. Mr Rosenthal also included a focus on Iran in view of its disruptive effect on the process of transition in the Arab region. At EU level, the Netherlands will continue to press for tougher sanctions against Syria.

Because of the economic decline in the Arab region, the Dutch government is emphasising economic growth and socioeconomic reforms. Priority will also be given to promoting the rule of law and protecting human rights.

In addition, Mr Rosenthal wants attention to be paid to women’s issues, media and internet freedom, freedom of religion and the protection of minorities. The government will also step up its efforts on water in the region in light of the present drought. Maximum use will be made of Dutch knowledge institutions, with water functioning as a niche market for the Dutch business community.
