Morocco Exceptionalism

During a press conference the Moroccan Minister of Interior Taieb Cherkaoui announced officially that the turnout for today Moroccan legislative elections is 45%. Many observers, political analysts and some media speculated that the turnout was going to be even lower than the 37% of the 2007 elections. They were totally wrong just because they based their analysis on simplistic assumptions that put all countries in the Arab region in the same “basket”. Morocco today proved its exceptionalism in the region. A reform minded King who has initiated a series of exceptional and major reforms was quick to answer his people demands, aspirations and announced key constitutional reforms and pledged to organize fair and transparent elections. He respected his promise and more than 13 million Moroccans were able to cast their votes and elect freely their potential representatives in the Lower house. More important is that he granted again the Moroccan Sahrawis living in the southern provinces to prove once agin their unshakable patriotism, their commitment to the Moroccanity and their involvement in the democratic process under way in the Kingdom. The turnout once again in the southern provinces was the highest compared to other regions (more than 65%). Now it’s high time for the political analysts to reconsider their hasten analysis on Morocco and see the real picture that Morocco has set in the Arab region : A stable, democratic and ambitious country.
