Morocco’s trade deficit increased by 8.6 percent to a total of 1.6 billion U.S. dollars in January, the foreign exchange regulator said on Monday.
According to the statistics, the rise in the deficit was driven by a 7-percent increase in imports to 4.1 billion dollars, particularly due to a hike in raw materials of 43.8 percent and food imports of 6.9 percent.
Morocco’s exports also increased by 5.9 percent to reach nearly 2.5 billion dollars, but remained far less in value than imports.
The increase in exports was pushed by a hike of 23 percent in phosphate, 4.6 percent in aeronautics products and 3 percent in agriculture products.
