Rio de Janeiro (dpa) – Former Moroccan athlete confirmed Tuesday that she is mulling standing for the IOC presidency next year.
“Why not?” she told dpa in Rio de Janeiro.
“I have not decided yet, there is a long list of contenders, but it could be,” she said.
El Moutawakel won the 400-metre hurdles in the Los Angeles 1984 Olympics to become the first African Muslim woman to win an Olympic gold medal. She is currently one of the vice presidents of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and her current boss Jacques Rogge is set to leave the job next year.
In the election that is to take place in September 2013 in Buenos Aires, she could become the first woman to take the helm of the IOC. Other likely candidates are China‘s Ser Miang, Germany‘s Thomas Bach and Puerto Rico‘s Richard Carrion.
