RABAT, Morocco — More than half of Morocco’s judges have signed a petition calling for judicial reform by making prosecutors independent of the executive branch.
The 1,800 members of Morocco’s judges’ club, a banned but tolerated association, signed a petition calling for the implementation of royal promises for judicial reform.
The club was formed in August and banned during a period of pro-democracy demonstrations across the country, which had demands including greater independence of the judiciary.
A new constitution promoted by the king includes elements of reform, but the judges claim they have yet to be implemented.
Salaries and positions for Morocco’s 3,000 judges are controlled by the executive branch through the Ministry of Justice.
