Paris – France welcomed, on Monday, the election of Morocco to the United Nations Security Council as a non-permanent member, saying the election reflects its “responsible and effective” diplomacy on the African continent.

“We warmly congratulate” Morocco for its election to the Security Council for the biennium 2012-2013, said spokesman of the Quai d’Orsay, Bernard Valero.

Morocco, which represents the group of African states, “made a significant contribution to maintaining peace and security, through its early and constant involvement in the operations of peacekeeping on the African continent as well as through the responsible and effective diplomacy it led,” he said at a press briefing.

France, one of the five permanent members of the Security Council, is also “delighted” by “the prospect of working closely with Morocco in the Security Council for the next two years, thanks to the excellent relations between our two countries,” he added.

Morocco was elected, on Friday, in the first round and with an overwhelming majority, a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for a two-year term as of January 1st, 2012, following a vote of the 193 UN member states.
