According to the latest data, up to December 16 Morocco had delivered 331.330 tons of citrus and other fruit and vegetables, compared to the 381.430 tons in the same period last year. Citrus fruit are thus registering a drop of 22% for citrus fruits.

Particulary relevant has been the lowering in the export of clementinescoming from the Souss region which reported a -33% compared to the same period in 2011.

The cold climate registered during the blossoming is the main cause of the downturn of citruses’ exports. In fact, the cold affected the quality and quantity of the fruit, moreover delaying the start of the season by 15 – 20 days.

Moroccan operators estimate that this year’s citrus campaign will be the worst one of the last 50 years. At most, a total of 400 thousand tons of citrus (175,000 tons of which would be clementines) could be delivered, against the 443,000 tons forecasted at the beginning of the season.
