Rabat – Morocco is well placed to obtain the status of a pioneering country in terms of democracy at the regional level, President of the Socialist Group in the European Parliament, Martin Schulz said on Monday in Rabat.
“I am convinced that Morocco can obtain the status of a pioneering country in democracy in the southern shore of the Mediterranean,” Schulz told the press following a meeting with Lower House Speaker Abdelwahed Radi.
He noted that the landslide approval of the new constitution, in a referendum on July 1, mirrors the commitment of the Moroccan people to implementing sweeping reforms.
The Socialist Group in the European Parliament commended the “considerable progress” achieved by the Constitutional Council notably following the confirmation of the referendum results.
Issues relating to cooperation between Morocco and the EU were also raised during the meeting.
