Strasbourg – Morocco is well committed on the path of political reforms initiated by HM King Mohammed VI in his speech of March 2011, said Luca Volontè, rapporteur of Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE)’s Political Affairs Committee on the “Evaluation of the Partnership for Democracy in respect of the Parliament of Morocco.
The new constitution is enforced and its implementation has yielded its first fruits, said Volontè who just paid a fact-finding visit to Rabat.
The government formation, as a result of the elections of November 2011 observed by the Assembly, mirrors the will of voters, he said. “The Parliament ‘s political role has been strengthened.”
“Much remains to be done, for sure, in other areas as equality between men and women, the legal system’s reform, and the fight against corruption,” he noted.
“It is crucial that the reforming momentum continues and includes all aspects mentioned in resolution 1818 under which the PACE granted Morocco’s parliament in June 2011 the status of Partner for Democracy,” he emphasized.
Volontè said that the Assembly as well as the Council of Europe are ready to assist the Moroccan authorities as part of the 2012-2014 priorities for Morocco, signed Tuesday in Strasbourg by SG of the Council of Europe and Foreign minister Saad Dine El Otmani.
