Rabat – Morocco welcomes the large international condemnation of the decision by the Israeli government to construct new housing units in Al-Quds East in a blatant violation of the international legality, Foreign Minister, Taib Fassi Fihri said on Monday in Rabat.

“Following the decision by the Israeli government to build 1,100 new housing units in the Gilo neighbourhood in Al-Quds East and its announced intention to construct a new colony of 2,600 housing units, the Kingdom of Morocco, whose Sovereign HM King Mohammed VI chairs the Al Quds Committee, voices satisfaction regarding the large international condemnation of the Israeli attitude that constitutes a blatant violation of the international legality and UN resolutions prohibiting any change in the status of the occupied Palestinian territories, including Al-Quds East,” Fassi Fihri said at a joint press briefing with his British counterpart, William Hague.

These illegal and unacceptable Israeli decisions show a dangerous propensity for undermining the chances for peace in the region and hampering the international community’s initiatives to this end.

Stressing the need for supporting efforts aiming to uphold the path of negotiations instead of that of force and the fait-accompli, the Minister said Morocco urges the UN to take a firm stand promoting a climate propitious for resuming negotiations with a view to avoiding all that can hamper the efforts undertaken in this regard, such as the unilateral measures taken by Israel.

Fassi Fihri also expressed Morocco’s solidarity with the brotherly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia following the breaking up of a plot to assassinate the Saudi Ambassador to the US.

“The Kingdom of Morocco strongly condemns this attempt which goes against Islamic and human values and morals and violates the ways and customs of the international law,” the Minister said.

Morocco is astonished at the attitude of Iranian circles who continue to threaten their neighbors and to interfere in domestic affairs of states, said Fassi Fihri, noting that “these same reasons led Morocco to sever its relations with Iran.”
