According to Juan Carlos Pérez Mesa, analyst specialising in international horticulture, this expansion comes at the competition’s expense, for example, the Spanish region of Almeria’s.

Morocco holds 70% of France’s tomato market share and has a strong presence in the UK.

Moroccan production is also increasing it’s presence on the German market thanks to French operators. “Transportation platforms such as Saint Charles International in Perpignan seem to be almost exclusively dedicated to Moroccan products” claims the analyst. Whilst Almeria may be ahead in sectors such as courgettes or peppers, he points out that Moroccan imports of such products are increasing. Morocco produces about 75,000 tons of pepper annually, of which 60,000 tons are primarily exported to Europe.

It should be noted that these positive agricultural performances in Morocco are mainly thanks to the Green Morocco Plan, an initiative to boost agriculture.
