Morocco will participate in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Extraordinary Summit on Terrorism scheduled on Saturday in Burkina Faso’s capital Ouagadougou, an official statement said Friday night.
A delegation composed of the minister of foreign affairs and the director general of the foreign intelligence bureau will represent the Moroccan king at the summit, said the statement by the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Morocco has applied for a membership of ECOWAS after it rejoined African Union in January 2017.
Its membership was agreed in principle at the June 2017 summit of ECOWAS but it’s still pending.
This invitation by the current chairman of ECOWAS is a recognition of Morocco’s consistent and decisive support in the fight against terrorism threats, said the statement.
The summit will provide an opportunity to discuss the counter-terrorism cooperation in the region and ways and means of strengthening it, it added.
