Khartoum – The ambassador of Morocco, His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Maelainain announced the launch of the Atbara gold mine on 21st February at a cost of $450 million, funded by his country. This is not Morocco’s only investment in Sudan; there are others currently operating in various fields, he said.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting yesterday with Presidential Assistant Jaffar Al-Mirghani, he said his country is investing in Gafa agricultural projects in the White Nile in partnership with Kenana Sugar Company, with Morocco providing the capital, $600 million, to produce up to 325 thousand tons of sugar.

The ambassador said Sudan and Morocco signed more than 29 cooperation agreements, some of which must still be initiated. He said relations between the two countries will witness a new fillip in 2013. The higher committee between the two countries will meet in Rabat, and the meetings will provide an opportunity to review the economic cooperation between the two countries.

He said he briefed the presidential assistant on the development and level of bilateral relations, including relations on a personal level between King Mohamed and President Omer Al Bashir. They also focused on the economic relations between the two nations and ways to further develop them, he said.
