(Prensa Latina) Nuclear safety experts will meet tomorrow and until October 4 in the Moroccan city of Marrakech at the International Regulator’s Conference on Nuclear Security.
Although Morocco does not have nuclear weapons or energy, according to the organizers the conference is in line with the plans of the African country for the future use of these resources.
The conference in Marrakech will be the third international event of this type after the editions of 2012 and 2016, organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The main goal of the event is to raise awareness of the importance of a comprehensive national regulatory security program, and promote international cooperation in nuclear safety.
Twelve years ago, Morocco developed its first nuclear facility: the MA-R1 research reactor, located at the Maamora Center for Nuclear Studies, approximately 25 kilometers north of Rabat.
According to the IAEA, the construction of the reactor was successful but this nuclear installation has not yet been connected to the national electricity grid.
Morocco is considered a net importer of energy, so it needs alternative sources to meet demand in that sector.
