Morocco has announced its plans to build a second desalination plant at Laayoune to cater to the water requirements of the area over the next decade.
The facility, with a 600 l/s capacity, will become operational by next year.
Due to the growing population, state-owned electricity and water facility ONEEP will construct a 18,000m3-per-day-capacity wastewater facility in Laayoune this year.
At Dakhla, construction works of the wastewater plant are expected to commence soon. This facility will cater to the water requirements of the Dakhla-Eddahab region.
Earlier this month, a partnership agreement was signed between the OCP Group, the Oum Er Rbia Hydraulic Basin Agency (Abhoer) and the Autonomous Water and Electricity Distribution Company (Radees) and for the construction of a wastewater treatment plant in Safi.
As part of the project, several infrastructures will be constructed including a pumping station and a wastewater pre-treatment plant.
The construction of the two facilities would require an investment of MAD100m ($10.3m). This phase of the project will be funded by Radees.
OCP Group will build a wastewater treatment plant in Safi with a budget of MAD 480m ($49.5m). Following the treatment of the wastewater, it will be reused in its plants for processing phosphate.
The project is expected to enable the reuse of eight million cubic meter of water annually
