New York (United Nations) – Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Mohamed Loulichki, stressed the unfailing commitment of Morocco to nuclear disarmament.
“Morocco’s adherence to disarmament issues is a strategic, unfailing and fervent choice that shows our commitment to peace, security and to the principle of peaceful settlement of conflicts,” Loulichki said before the UN Committee on disarmament and international security.
The Moroccan diplomat added that the Kingdom remains “deeply convinced” of the pertinence of the UN competent mechanisms in terms of disarmament and international security,” noting, however, that the efficiency of these mechanisms “depends on the political willingness of states and the respect of obligations and undertaken commitments.”
Thanks to dialogue, all states are able to reach “compromises which enable the progressive achievements of the goals of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT),” he said, adding that “the security of all nations lies in peaceful coexistence, dialogue and mutual trust.”
Recalling the human suffering resulted from the uncontrolled and illicit traffic of small arms and light weapons, Loulichki reiterated Morocco’s firm support for the “the Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects.”
He also highlighted the worrying situation in the Sahel-Saharan region, which “requires, more than ever, the coordination of efforts to strengthen cooperation between the states of the region on the basis of an inclusive approach.”
