Rabat – Morocco stands as a model in the region in terms of reinforcing democracy, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Sunday in Rabat.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Foreign Minister Saad Dine El Otmani, Clinton said that Morocco offers an example of what can be achieved in strengthening democracy, recalling that the reforms launched under the leadership of HM Mohammed VI, notably the adoption of a new constitutions that enshrines liberties and human rights.
Clinton said that the U.S. government congratulate HM the King and the Moroccan government on the successful constitutional referendum and the parliamentary elections that took place last year.
The U.S. Secretary of State pointed out to the longstanding partnership with Morocco, adding that the two countries are set to further reinforce their friendship and partnership which dates back to 1776.
Clinton also commended the recent exchange of visits between Moroccan and Algerian officials, which she described as a step in the right direction.
She said that the U.S. wants to see continued progress in the Moroccan-Algerian relations.
Clinton also hailed Morocco for its “important” role within the Arab League and the Security Council to find a solution to the crisis in Syria.
