Madrid – Morocco and Spain reinforced their cooperation in the field of environment protection with the setting up of a permanent joint committee on the management and preservation of the Intercontinental Biosphere Reserve of the Mediterranean.
The joint committee held its first meeting on Wednesday in Algeciras (southern Spain) to outline the 2010-2015 plan of action for the management of the biosphere reserve.
The committee is made up of eight representatives: four from the Moroccan government and four from the Spanish government, two of which represent environment authorities in the autonomous region of Andalusia.
The setting up of this joint committee was based on a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2011 between the two countries relating to the protection of biodiversity and the Intercontinental Biosphere Reserve of the Mediterranean.
The Reserve, shared by Spain and Morocco, was established and officially designated by the UNESCO in 2006.
