New York (U.N.)  –  Morocco, as the only Arab representative in the U.N. Security Council, shall ensure that “the various texts proposed in the executive body reflect the requirements of the level reached by the crisis in Syria and integrate the repository “of the Arab League calling for a binding resolution on Syria, Morocco’s ambassador to the U.N., Mohamed Loulichki, said Monday in New York.

“Since joining the (Security) Council, Morocco was for all initiatives to promote political dialogue in Syria. Recently, the International envoy, Kofi Annan, has asked members of the Security Council to pressure the parties and make them responsible for the consequences of their actions,” recalled Loulichki.

For his part, “the Secretary General of the Arab League (Nabil Al-Arabi) had asked the U.N. Security Council that his action (regarding Syria) is placed under Chapter VII, given the worsening situation in this country,” the Ambassador told the press after a closed-door session of the fifteen-nation Council devoted to Syria.

Chapter VII provides for sanctions to force a country to implement a resolution.
